The IFC advocates for a year-round process of fraternities selecting new members. The only restriction placed on chapters is the restriction of not involving alcohol or drugs in ANY recruitment activities.
Most chapters will actively recruit at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. This period of recruitment is the focal point of the chapter for anywhere from a couple of weeks to over a month. Any student who has been admitted to California State University, Chico can be considered for membership. Recruitment can begin as early as anytime after admittance and acceptance into the university including the summer prior to the start of their first-year.
During the recruitment period, fraternities will host events for you to attend. We encourage you to monitor the Orion, attend info nights hosted be the IFC and visit the collection of fraternity information tables. Fraternities have autonomy to develop their own recruitment schedule and the IFC assists with promotional efforts. You can attend as many or as few events as you would like. We encourage all who are interested in joining a fraternity to maximize their options and learn about fraternities through attending events, speaking with members and using the internet to get information.
During the process of recruitment each organization will employ their own method of selecting members. We encourage you to ask questions of each organization as to how they do this; how they will distribute invitations for membership (commonly called a "bid") and any other questions you have about the process of recruitment and joining the fraternity. If you attend events at multiple fraternities you may receive multiple "bids". The process of offering bids is not regulated by the IFC and each fraternity may extend bids at any time they would like as long as the policies regarding recruitment are followed.
While you may choose to participate in multiple recruitment processes, including considering membership in a Interfraternity Council (IFC) or Multicultural Greek Organization (MGC) you may only join one fraternity between the two councils. Once you become a full member of that fraternity, you cannot join another fraternity on campus with the exception of honor societies. For more information, please contact us.
